The Mirror Truth A Novel of Manifest Delusions Volume 2 Michael R Fletcher 9780995312227 Books
Earlier this year, I read Beyond Redemption, the first Manifest Delusions novel & loved it. It was one of my favorite books of the first half of 2016. I was eager to read the sequel, which was just recently published, and I loved it just as well. This book certainly falls into the Grimdark genre, even pushing the envelope. It is innovative and dark, riveting and violent, psychotic and surreal. The author, Michael Fletcher, has created a fascinating fantasy world with a bizarre & intriguing cast of characters. Wait till you read about Schnitter (who would fit right into the Hellraiser universe)!! Several characters from the first novel are resurrected for the sequel, each with their own mission as well as their own secret agendas. The POV changes from chapter to chapter, delving into these different characters, who can be roughly characterized as violent psychotic anti-heroes. The action is constant, and the plot twists and turns, keeping you on the edge of your seat. It's pure fun, though dark and twisted. A Must Read.Product details

The Mirror Truth A Novel of Manifest Delusions Volume 2 Michael R Fletcher 9780995312227 Books Reviews
I don't often write reviews, but I so blown away by "Beyond Redemption" that I had to. And then came its sequel, "The Mirror's Truth" and when I finished it I found myself blown away a second time and just had to let others know how great this series is! It continues the story from "Beyond Redemption" with my favorite characters returning and some new favorites introduced. "The Mirror's Truth" also deals with and philosophizes on themes like cowardice, bravery, and what defines sanity and insanity. The whole book was amazing but as it drew near the end I'll admit I didn't see how the novel could conclude satisfyingly. But wow was I wrong! As someone who is usually pretty good at guessing endings to books and movies not only was I greatly surprised, but the ending is just so good! Overall, for people who loved "Beyond Redemption" this is a must read!
I've been eagerly awaiting this follow up to Beyond Redemption all year. I was not disappointed! This book takes everything that Fletcher did well in Beyond Redemption and cranks it up to eleven. New Geisteskranken join familiar characters as a newly ascended god initiates a war to purify the world. The character development deepens as we learn more about the characters' backgrounds. Their relationships and allegiances are constantly shifting as they plot against each other even as they war with their own delusions and consciences (such as they are). They fight and rut and kill their way through a world where insanity defines everything and rules all, and where sanity itself may be the most dangerous delusion of all.
This book is wildly entertaining, profane, fun, gross, hilarious, violent, and just all around crazy... but at the same time I ofen found myself deeply moved by the feelings of pain, loss, guilt, shame, desperation, hope, and love felt by these characters. All the amorality and killing makes the eventual acts of sacrifice and redemption feel that much more heroic and earned. Without getting too corny, I did take valuable lessons away from this book reality is often yours to define, and your own demons and delusions can always be defeated. Not to worry though, Grimdark fans, it's not all unicorns and rainbows; not by a log shot. Bedeckt is still a brooding mess, Wichtig still a deluded narcissist, and Stehlen will still cut your throat as soon as look at you.
If Fletcher continues to develop and get better at his current pace, the future volumes in this series are going to be among the best the genre has to offer.
After loving Beyond Redemption and choosing it as my top read of 2016, I was beyond excited (get it?) to see that Fletcher wrote a sequel.
The Mirror's Truth picks up right where BR left off and just proves how great a writer Fletcher is. He does a stupendous job writing from so many different viewpoints and his characterization is so deep. Every character is fleshed out across the novel and, if you read BR, all of your favorites are back and better than ever. Fletch also proves that he is very original with his world building, magic system, and monster creation (though I guess you can't have a fantasy novel without a dragon). My favorite part about TMT is the ability to get inside the mind of each character. It allows you to get a sense of each character's drive and purpose and just adds so much to the storyline.
Fletcher is at the top of my reading list and he needs to be at the top of yours, especially if grimdark fantasy is your cup of tea. If you like Mark Lawrence, you'll love Michael Fletcher. But do yourself a favor and pick up Beyond Redemption first. You'll be happy you did.
The Manifest Delusions books are those types of reads that you have to set aside your expectations and dive right in if you are going to enjoy.
With the first book of the series, I didn't do this. While I loved the writing, setting, and story elements, I turned to the last page feeling "wronged" somehow because the characters did not meet my expectations. And this was a mistake on my part. If you went looking for heroes in Beyond Redemption...well...you were hunting snipes with a burlap sack in high grass with hungry lions.
So, with The Mirror's Truth, I set aside all of the things I wanted, and I read the book.
And I loved it.
If you like your worlds epic, your "heroes" flawed, and your gods bat-shit crazy, then these books are for you.
I would also like to point out that this was a self-published work as well, and the work that Michael did to bring this amazing book to market is the stuff that...well...books are written about. And it also won the r/Fantasy Stabby award for BEST SELF-PUBLISHED / INDEPENDENT NOVEL OF 2016!!!!
This is an amazing book and I can't wait to read more of the book Michael puts out, and trust me, from what I know he likes to put out ;)
