The MakoShark is the most advanced military aircraft in United States Air Force’s arsenal. It can travel at unreal speeds, disappear on radars, and fly so quietly that enemies standing outside on a clear day would not realize it was flying overhead until its shadow passed over them. Piloting the MakoShark is Colonel Kevin McKenna along with his weapons officer Munoz. Together, the pair are adventurous and precise as they take on the missions assigned to them by their command group. The most recent mission was to photograph German oil wells in the Barents Sea. Oil wells that, for some reason, are under constant protection by the German Air Force and Navy. Oil wells that might not be oil wells after all.William Lovejoy delivers a sensational, amazingly descriptive novel in Delta Blue. The novel is incredibly well written and takes the reader from Andrews Air Force base to the skies over Africa and all the way to a near Earth orbital platform known as Themis. Delta Blue Colonel McKenna Adventure Book 1 edition by William H Lovejoy Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
If I had known this book was going to be that good, I would have paid to read it. (Not much, mind you. I have my reputation as a penny pincher to uphold!) Finding it for free opened my eyes to another established writer I've overlooked. Now, I'm going to have to give up some of my hard-earned gelt to add some of his other novels. A serious competitor to Dale Brown and others of that ilk. Good work, a good read, and money well (not) spent!
If you are a reader that loves anything military, action packed, and/or maybe has a hint of science fiction they you will love Delta Blue by William H. Lovejoy. Delta Blue takes place at the end of the cold war (the early 1990’s). Colonel Kevin McKenna and his weapons officer Munoz take a mission flying MakoShark (their advanced military aircraft). They are tasked with flying over the Barents Sea to take pictures of the Oil Wells that the German Air Force and Navy have under constant protection. Through the eyes of this pilot you will get to travel far and wide. You’ll travel from the Andrews Air Force base to the skies over Africa and even as far as Themis, Earth’s orbital platform. What I loved about this book is the fact that both McKenna and his MakoShark seemed to be integral parts of the story. This novel is filled with details and action.
Delta Blue is a military thriller set at the end of the Cold War. William H Lovejoy does a great job of describing all of the technology (some of which seems to be from the realm of science fiction). One of the major characters in this book is one of those pieces of technology an aircraft named the MakoShark. The MakoShark can travel at crazy speeds and do it so quietly that they could be right over your head and you wouldn’t hear it. It disappears off of radars and flies extremely high up into the atmosphere. During a recent mission the pilot and copilot of the MakoShark were tasked with taking pictures of the Barents Sea and the “Oil wells” that the German Air Force and Navy keep under constant protection. During this mission they discover that maybe, just maybe, these “Oil wells” are not what they seem. What’s great about this novel is that Lovejoy uses immense detail in addition to elements of history to tell his story. Delta Blue is filled with action and suspense and perfect for anyone looking to be kept on the edge of their seat.
Delta Blue is a bit dated (instead of Russians we have Soviets) and it is an odd mix of present day with Nazi Germany. The plot imagines military air vehicles that have conventional engines plus rocket motors that can be throttled. An interesting concept and certainly plausible. The physics of high speed flight and near Earth orbit are also sound. With Germany as the aggressor and hoarding energy to fuel their war effort, the US forms an alliance with the Soviets. Sound familiar? But this is a story about people and it succeeds at that important level. There are some minor but glaring errors (colors of the German flag, shuffling character names), but read through those few instances and you'll be glad you did. This book is better than 3 star, but falls short of 4 star.
I've read some of Lovejoy's books in the past, and while I haven't been back to peruse his words lately, this particular premise caught my eye. The swirling allusions to international geo-politics, illegal environmental practices, a new rising force from Germany, and the threat of World War 3 sounded like a return to Lovejoy's classic style. His military background has always informed his books with a sense of authenticity that I've truly enjoyed, and this book was no different. From the well-balanced military and technical details to the subtle, engaging characters that he creates, Lovejoy has once again launched readers into a thrilling adventure that seems a bit too close to reality for us to easily shake off. It isn't some doomsday prophecy, but just a slight tweak of our current narrative into a world that isn't too impossible to imagine. Although there are a few moments in all of Lovejoy's writing that smacks of Ian Fleming and overdramatized dialogue/critical moments, I forgive him for being slightly heavy-handed at times, as the action and the complex plots more than make up for whatever hackneyed tools occasionally appear in his writing. This is another great one from Lovejoy, especially for his old fans who are looking for that earlier flair from his career.
This is an action-packed story set in the late stages of the Cold War. The technology -- some of which falls into the category of science fiction -- is well described and is a major character in the tale.
I had read this book some years ago as a paperback. When I learned that it was out as a e-book I had to read it again and thoroughly enjoyed the re-read.
